AFTER A QUICK SHOWER, they drove over to the resort restaurant for an early dinner. The open-air dining room was almost empty and the waiter gave them a secluded table that overlooked the beach. No matter where she was on the island, Tess found herself captivated by the view—white sand, turquoise water and a sky so blue, it hurt to look at it.

She sipped at a virgin piña colada as the waiter set their meal in front of them. Derek sat next to her, dressed in a thin cotton shirt and board shorts. The shirt was unbuttoned halfway down his chest and Tess had to fight the urge to smooth her hand over his deeply tanned skin. She loved to touch him whenever she felt the urge. But for the first time since Chloe had left, they weren’t alone. Her stomach growled as the scent of the seafood pasta she’d ordered drifted up from the plate. She hadn’t eaten anything but an apple since breakfast that morning, six hours before.

“I’m sorry about that thing with Alicia,” Derek said, smoothing his hand along her thigh as he kissed her bare shoulder.

“If she comes to the island, she better watch out. I’m good with my fists. She won’t be able to get you away from me.”

“I’d pay to see that,” he teased. “Especially if it involved mud and a lot of hair-pulling and screaming.”

Tess set her drink down and picked up her fork. “I’m starved. Sex works up such an appetite.” She took a bite of her pasta and moaned. “Oh, this is so good. We have to come back here again. There were four or five things on the menu I wanted to try.”

“You can order anything you want and have it delivered to the house,” he said.

“Really?”

“Anytime you want, day or night. Just dial nine.” He picked up his burger and took a bite. “So, tell me more about this fight you’re going to have with Alicia. Give me details. I want to picture it in my mind.”

“Pervert!” Tess cried.

“I bet you’re pretty scrappy. You look like you could hold your own in a fight.”

Tess tipped up her chin and pointed. “See this scar. Sixth grade, playground. I punched Billy Carlisle. Twice. In the nose. Blood everywhere. Then he punched me back. Two stitches and I got sent home by the principal.” She pointed to her knee. “I got this in a fight with Sally Armstrong. She called me a name and I threw my Backstreet Boys lunchbox at her. She pushed me down on the sidewalk and I cut my knee on a piece of glass.”

“Why did you fight so much?”

“I was always the odd girl,” she said. “Moving into a new school every six months or so. We didn’t have money for nice clothes. There were weeks that we lived out of the back of our pickup truck while my dad was looking for work. I didn’t have a mom. A lot of kids saw that as weakness and they thought they could take advantage of me.
